Greek authorities say a significant search and rescue operation has been launched east of the island of Karpathos after a ship reportedly carrying dozens of migrants sank through the night time.

The coast guard mentioned that on August 9 29 individuals, all males, had been rescued from the ocean 61KM (33 nautical miles, 38 miles) east southeast of Karpathos, a southeastern island between Rhodes and Crete. These rescued had been from Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran, and instructed authorities there had been roughly 60 to 80 individuals on board the vessel when it went down, the coast guard mentioned.
